NEW ORLEANS ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥” The East Division took the stage for Sun Belt Conference football ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥ Days on Wednesday to wrap up the event in New Orleans ahead of fall camps beginning next week.
Below is a brief quote from each coach, ahead of further coverage to come in upcoming weeks.
Coastal Carolina ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥” Tim Beck
Beck spent some time talking about how Coastal CarolinaÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s run to the national championship game in baseball has fueled his teamÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s drive to have more grit. He says that ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œthe Chants never beat the Chants.ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥
ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œWe learned a lot watching Kevin Schnall and our baseball program in the (MenÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s) College World Series,ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥ Beck said. ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œWe watched them and the grittiness of their team.
ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œOnly great teams beat them, and thatÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s part of the process that weÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™ve put our football team through this offseason.ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥
Marshall ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥” Tony Gibson
Gibson introduced his staff to the broader audience. While we, of course, know who these people are, the light shed on offensive coordinator Rod SmithÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s relationship with Gibson stuck out.
ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œRod and I worked together at Michigan, Arizona and WVU. Rod was my college roommate, and he was in my wedding,ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥ Gibson said. ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œRodÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s done a great job.ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥
It shows how Gibson was very intentional with his hires. He and Smith have a longstanding relationship that was able to transition well into setting up the Thundering Herd offense.
Gibson is the only Sun Belt coach without a returning starting quarterback to actually answer the question of who we can expect to see at the position, stating that Carlos Del Rio-Wilson would be the starter if the Herd played today, with Zion Turner and JacQai Long in competition in the upcoming camp.
Old Dominion ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥” Ricky Rahne
I asked Rahne, now the longest-tenured coach in the Sun Belt entering his sixth season, how he has progressed since his first year as a coach. He acknowledged that I was asking to parallel it with Gibson, which I appreciated.
ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œI think that one of the things for a first-year head coach like Gibson is that you can be around a lot of good people and they can prepare you,ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥ Rahne said. ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œBut there are still some things you just donÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™t know until you experience it. It can be little things on the day-to-day schedule that youÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™re just not able to anticipate.
ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œThose things still happen as you get more experience. You adjust a little faster and you donÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™t second-guess yourself. Maybe itÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s because you have more experience, like with anybody else in their job. I think itÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s one of those things where you learn on a day-to-day basis.ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥
Appalachian State ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥” Dowell Loggains
Loggains joins Gibson as another first-year coach in the SBC East. He comes from a spot as offensive coordinator at South Carolina and spent plenty of time in the NFL before that.
The MountaineersÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™ staff has a combined 93 years of NFL experience. TheyÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™ve coached players that have reached 46 Pro Bowls and eight Hall-of-Famers.
Loggains spent time talking about the similarities between the two worlds and the advantages that experience brings, saying that the NFL is more akin to NCAA Division I FBS than ever before, with revenue-sharing and transfer-portal negotiations acting as a de facto free agency.
ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œI think that the NFL sells,ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥ Loggains said. ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œAll of these guys want to play in the National Football League.
ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œWhen you talk about it ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥” weÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™ve been there; we know what it takes to get there. WeÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™re going to train that way. I think itÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s really beneficial, and it allows for more retention. It also teaches you in the negotiation part of this. ItÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s business, not personal. I think that helps a ton, too.ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥
James Madison ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥” Bob Chesney
The Dukes will be MarshallÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s matchup for the annual ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œ75ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥ game in Huntington on Nov. 8.
Chesney spoke on the importance of divisional rivalries in the SBC East, as the conference is the last one with them nationally, while also briefly talking about the importance of the game.
ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œI think itÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™ll be special. ItÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s a tragic situation that we all learned about as we went through our years with the movie (ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥˜We Are MarshallÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™) coming out,ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥ Chesney said. ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œThe celebration of those lives is something that we will certainly honor and respect as best as we possibly can. IÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™m honored to be part of that.ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥
Georgia Southern ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥” Clay Helton
Helton was the only coach in the SBC East to bring a quarterback with him to SBC ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥ Days. While JC French is certainly atop the depth chart, a nice wrinkle for the Eagles is that HeltonÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s son Turner returns as a redshirt junior and is likely one of the best backup options in the league.
ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œWeÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™re so thankful to have JC as one of the only returning starters in the league and the first since weÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™ve been here,ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥ Helton said. ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œObviously, with the depth of the room, itÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s a special moment for me personally to have your son, to be able to have someone who has actually played college football and is the same age as JC.
ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œHeÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s also free. In this day and time, thatÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s important to have.ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥
Georgia State ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥” Dell McGee
McGee and the Panthers closed out the event and had one of the funniest moments of the week when a reporter asked Henry Bryant, a redshirt senior defensive lineman, if he has a chance to reprise his high school role as a running back.
ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œIÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™m not sure, but it would be lovely to tote the bean again,ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥ Bryant said. ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œYou know I know how to do it.ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥
Said McGee with a chuckle: ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥œThatÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™s a good question. WeÃÛ·èÖ±²¥™re still identifying our short-yardage situations, so we will look into that for the future. We will use some defensive linemen as extra tight ends, so we may put him back there at fullback a time or two.ÃÛ·èÖ±²¥
